Aging and Caregiving
It is important to recognize when you need help and to reach out and ask for it. As a specialist in gerontology, i.e. the study of aging, I am actively engaged in working with clients to find ways together to help overcome problems and to brainstorm ideas for adjusting to these new life stages in a meaningful way. My approach is to create a safe place where sensitive and painful feelings can be openly discussed with compassion, and sometimes with humor as we journey together to find solutions.
Aging |
As we age, sometimes anxious feelings get in the way of managing our fears to adjust to a new age group or the need to be self-sufficient. It can be frustrating when people make decisions without your input, and you feel like you are being sidelined in society. You may have thoughts of being irrelevant, fear of declining abilities or feel isolated, depressed and anxious.
I have worked with a number of clients: newly widowed working through loss/grief, people finding a new purpose and inner strength, and individuals pondering the question of what it means for them to get older. I can help you navigate your unique challenges and explore possibilities. |
Caregiving |
Caring for an aging parent is complicated. Frustration happens when the roles have been reversed and you are expected to provide the support, and maybe you are not sure how to help your loved one. How do you put your “best self” forward to provide what is essential for the person you are trying to help?I help individuals and families make decisions and strategically navigate the aging process while maintaining a healthy and positive lifestyle.
Sometimes an impartial outsider can help when family members are stuck and do not hear each other’s fears, frustrations and concerns. It is important for me to help people weave more balance and support into their lives as they juggle careers, marriage, and raising children. Together we can brainstorm next steps and community resources, as well as process life transitions: symptoms (memory loss), diagnosis (cancer, Parkinson’s), relocation, caregiver support, and communication tools. Contact me and we can discuss how I can help. A 15 minute phone consultation is complimentary. Feel free to call (650) 416-6555 or email [email protected] to schedule a time to talk. |
